Human Footprint

This is something that has rocked our little family. We are so so green. But after our 10 year old was in tears over how awful we are to mother earth, we have now taken even more steps to be green. We are even looking at a solar panel to power the zoo. I have purchase reusable bags for shopping. We are going to set up an indoor compost bin to go along with our outside bin. We do recycle, but now we will be doing even more. It feels good, but somewhat exhausting to think about. I am in the process of making a chart of how we are going greener so the kids and Rick and I can be reminded of what we do and what more we can do. K~

Hey Kirstin,
Congrats on the green revolution. In Seattle it's a little mandatory, though I have a serious problem with the transportation infrastructure. 6 kids from the high school are doing an "Inconvient Ride" biking from NY to Seattle to call attention to climate change (also one 8 year old) Not to be a downer, the indoor composting does gross me out somewhat, the one I considered -prior to banishment from the community garden- was supposed to be on my kitchen counter. Since I have a garbage loving dog, I couldn't face the possible mountains of disgust that would await me when I got home. Coffee grounds from your local shop for garden supposedly work wonders for composting and greenery. Tell Cora I have Vegan shoes, made out of jeep tires. The most uncomfortable things I own, but earth friendly.
Happy Earth Day! Best one I remember was at drunken revelry at SDSU, story for another time.

Yes Lisa, C wanted to become a vegetarian. Then she decided that she like meat too much. But, we are toying with that idea. Rick was really supportive. I replied with amazment that he would give up whoppers. He said " Oh, I'm not going vegetarian!!, but I will support who does" Something like that. It was funny and typical Rick.
I agree with the indoor compost in your situation. I know Harper is a bit curious about things on the counter.

so funny for this old-fashioned farmer-state girl hear you two hippie-state girls talk about nature :) he he.

i'm all for green. but indoor composting is kind of gross to me too. what about worms? i want some worms.

I usually keep a bin of worms all year for the zoo. I collect them when it rains and keep them going for most of the winter. If you need worms, let me know, and I can try and harvest some for when you come up. I am not doing the indoor compost. I have looked into it, and it is way too expensive to set up. I would rather put the money towards the solar panel project. We have a really well established compost in our yard. It is about 13 years old. We have just wonderful rich dirt every year for my outdoor pots. It's just a great thing. We are just going to use this for now. K~
